Like TomTom's other navigation systems, the ONE XL gives you coverage in all fifty of the United States, as well as Canada--all stored on 1 GB of internal memory.

But it's not just the broad geographical coverage that makes the TomTom ONE XL special. The user-friendly design also puts it a step above other navigation systems. The crystal-clear multicolor display makes for exceptionally easy viewing of maps, routes, driving directions, and other traveling information, such as mileage and distance. Measuring 4.3 inches, the TFT display offers an expanded widescreen view of brilliant two- and three-dimensional graphics. The device also features 32 MB RAM and 266 MHz CPU, making it responsive and zippy. Using the USB port and the provided cable, you can use your PC to add your own points of interest. Memory expansion is made possible by an SD card slot.

The ONE XL provides clear and accurate turn-by-turn voice instructions, so that you don't have to take your eyes off the road while your vehicle is on the move. Voice instructions are issued at a speed-sensitive volume, so as your vehicle's engine becomes louder or quieter as your speed changes, the volume adjusts itself accordingly, guaranteeing clear and easy listening. And because voice instructions are available in over 30 languages, just about anyone will find the TomTom ONE XL to be an invaluable system.

With its touch-sensitive screen, the TomTom ONE XL puts programming and operation literally at your fingertips to make sophisticated technology simple. The built-in database offers thousands of points of interest for you to use as destinations or reference points as you plan your trip. The ONE XL will also provide a selection of available routes, giving you the option of avoiding toll roads or choosing between the quickest or the most scenic routes. The database includes zip codes to simplify your route selection, and for extra convenience, the ONE XL lets you save the addresses of frequent destinations, making route planning easier and faster than ever. Other display features include a compass mode to assist you with directional orientation, and an anti-glare screen for optimal viewing even in direct sunlight.

For additional navigational features to assist with trip planning, the built-in Bluetooth connection provides access to TomTom PLUS subscription-based services, so that you can tune in to the latest traffic and weather conditions, as well as download additional city maps, voices, points of interest, and much more. The ONE XL adds to these capabilities with FM radio-based RDS-TMC traffic information as an available accessory (not included).

Weighing less than 10 ounces and measuring 3.4 x 4.7 x 1.2 inches, the TomTom ONE XL can be easily installed in any vehicle. An included windshield suction mount holds it in place. Plus, with an operating temperature range of an icy -10 degrees to a sweltering 55 degrees Celsius (14 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit), the navigator is durable enough for New England winters or Arizona summers. The TomTom ONE XL is powered by an internal lithium ion battery that can be charged from your vehicle's cigarette lighter with the included 12-24V adapter.

What's in the Box

2 out of 5 stars Tom Tom - Dumb Dumb?   January 4, 2009
Not Pleased (Irvine, Ca United States)

I got this GPS after reading the good reviews on Amazon. However, so far the unit has proven to be a big disappointment. For me, the biggest problem with this GPS is that it doesn't give the best directions for getting to destinations. I've tested it on a few places that I knew how to get to, and about 50% of the time it told me to take routes that are simply out of the way (some are so obviously wrong, leaving me wonder how in the world they came up with the direction). Sometimes it would announce that I've arrived at the destination when I haven't yet reached the building. I live in a well populated area that has been developed for quite some time, so there is no excuse for the incorrect information. Because of the wrong directions I've got so far on places that I'm familiar with, I don't feel like I can trust this GPS to take me to a place that I haven't been to before. Before I leave for a new destination, I still have to get the directions from Yahoo or Mapquest to use in conjunction with the GPS, so I can make sure that this little gadget doesn't take me on a wrong or longer route.

Other things that annoy me are the voice prompt (it says to "keep left" on the freeways and streets when it simply means not to be in the right lane, and the repeating prompts sound "nagging" after a while) and the lack of the text to speech feature. The trip planning feature also isn't very user friendly. Overall, I'm not satisfied with this GPS.

1 out of 5 stars Unit Severely Short On Memory   January 3, 2009
George T. Macknight (Pelzer, SC USA)
This GPS unit is out of memory out of the box! I won't dispute any of what was said above, but be aware that all the voice options, all the help, all the frills that come loaded on your XL when you pull it out of the package take up so much memory that you can't update you maps with them on the unit. They must be sacrificed in order to download and install any up-to-date maps. This was a great big deal breaker for me... my unit TomTom XL 330s went straight back to the store. The pity is that TomTom knows this and refuses to acknowledge their design flaw. Don't buy this unit.

1 out of 5 stars A useless product from a useless company with a useless website   January 3, 2009
C. Aymar (Harrisburg, PA United States)
I bought this as a gift for my in-laws. It was later given back to me because they just couldn't figure out how to get it to work properly. First of all, it thought they were in Guam (we live in Pennsylvania). After 3 hours of fussing with it, I finally got it to load the correct map. After that, there was ZERO GPS reception, even outside with a clear sky and 10 minutes of allowing it to sit. Called TomTom's tech support. Waited on hold for 30 minutes before being HUNG UP ON because their lines had closed during the time I was on hold (what kind of CS is that?). That was at 7pm EST, folks - so good luck if you're in PST and have a job.

What's worse is that this thing absolutely, positively must be attached to a computer of some sort to get it to function properly or make any moderate settings changes. Forget about taking it out of the box and having it work right off the bat like my Magellan did.

Also, I'm guessing that it must have a clear view of the sky at all times. My Magellan worked flawlessly for the first time indoors, within 10 feet of a window.

I would not buy a TomTom product again, under any circumstance. This product, the company that sells it and their website are the WORST I have EVER seen.

5 out of 5 stars Good GPS for the $$$   January 1, 2009
C. Lucas (Virginia)
I bought 2 of these when it was the Gold Box Deal of the Day @ $99 each. You can't beat that price! I would have purchased 1 more but Amazon restricted it to 2. Anyway, locks into satellites quickly. Easy to use. I played around w/ it and pretty user friendly even for me. These were gifts and they were a big hit! My brother in law loves it and my nephew does too! Both were hit! Needless to say they are still talking about it! Here's just a hint: All GPS devices have there pros and cons, from the ecomony ones to the most expensive ones regardless of the brand. So, keep this in mind!

3 out of 5 stars Good - but confusing setup   December 29, 2008
Mark (Texas)
I got the OneXL for my wife for Christmas. We used it for part of our family visit traveling. It worked well until I tried to update it to the latest US map. As many others here have pointed out, when you update the map to the latest version, the OneXL gives you a map of Guam, but not the new US map. I have spent several hours trying to get this fixed, and I finally manged to do so. It took updating the software on the GPS, in addition to updating the map.

So, be careful when you get this unit. If you plan on updating it, update the software on the unit before the maps, so you don't have any down time. If TomTom were smart, their update program would realize that the latest map also needed newer software.

As to the rest of how it works, it's okay. Like most GPS it can find some strange routes. Still, it does seem to do its job. As time goes on, I may come back and update this review for overall usage.
