Oregon 400T in Europe July 10, 2010 V. Mehta (Austin,TX) The Oregon 400t was a life saver on our last Europe trip. We were traveling across Europe in two minivans. We had 11 people in our group, 5 of them children. So we did not want to get lost. Apart from the Oregon 400t we also had a Garmin C330 for auto direction. Oregon 400t showed superior sensitivity compared to C330. The C330 was constantly losing satelite reception, but Oregon was almost always there. But the biggest benefit of the Oregon 400t was while walking in the downtown Paris, Venice and Rome.
Venice was the most challanging with only foot traffic through these very narrow alleys. One night it was about 10:30 PM in Venice and we had just finished our dinner. We were about 2.0 miles from the bus stop. All the shops had closed. Most of the tourist had left and there were very few people on the street. It had started to rain lightly. I had marked our bus stop as a waypoint, and so we set the route to the bus stop waypoint. We started walking through the narrow zigzag alleys. The narrow alleys were sometimes only about 4 to 5 feet wide, lined with walls of 2-3 story high buildings. Inspite of the rain and narrow alleys Oregon guided us straight back to the bus stop. Unfortunately when we reached the bus stop, we just saw our bus leave. So we had to wait until midnight for our next bus. Our hotel was about 22 km away in the suburbs. Before leaving the hotel I had spoken to the owner and written some landmark information to find our way back. The landmark was a 400 year Old church near the hotel. But it was too dark and rainy to notice street sign or anything from the bus. No one on the bus spoke English. We set the route on the Oregon 400t for our Hotel. Interestingly, I was able to quickly confirm that we were on the right bus as the bus was travelling on the charted routed on the Oregon. Even though I was not near a window, the Oregon did not lose satelite reception. Once we reached within 1000 feet from the Hotel, I rang the bell to get down from the bus. When we got down we noticed there was no one on the street at that hour. It was dark, rainy and hard to know which direction to proceed for our hotel. But the Oregon guided us straight back. It was a relief to not get lost at that hour of the night, especially while traveling in a large group with children.
I feel good that we had the Oregon 400t with us.
The only issue was the AA batteries. A standard battery only lasts about one day of outdoor use (~10 hours) on a Oregon 400t. Since we were now relying more on the Oregon, we decided to always keep an extra pair of batteries.
I would highly recommend the Garmin Oregon 400T.
Great product June 2, 2010 Ryan Lovato (Tucson, AZ) I bought this for geocaching. After buying 2 cheaper gps units before this one, I decided to buy this. I decided on this because of the touch screen. I have a IPhone and I was looking for a gps that was easy to use. Other gps I have tried were very confusing. I had no problem turning this on and using it without any instructions. I have no complaints with not being able to see the screen and I live in Arizona. My only compliant is there isn't really a place to hook a lanyard or something to it. It does have a clip with carabiner but it would be better if I could clip it to my belt or just have a ring to run a lanyard on it. It is very accurate! I would recommend this to any iphone uses who want a easy to use gps.
Great hardware - not so great base topo map May 20, 2010 J. Lewis My review has been sitting over in the Oregon 400i section (since Amazon initially wrongly shipped me that item and that was down as the product I bought). So I decided to move it over here as I've owned a Oregon 400t since back around 9/2008 and have now used it with several Garmin 24k topo maps.
Have only had product a few hours but WOW! - what a piece of hardware. It is iPhone-like in its touch interface. Very intuitive, very easy to navigate. Very easy to set waypoints, navigate to waypoints, and so on. Fits well in the hand but feels like carrying a small rock-a lot of weight in a small volume.
Unfortunately, at least in my area of San Antonio, TX, Garmin must be using an old topo map base like Tiger. Similar to a 2001-era Magellan, the 400t map shows me about 450 FEET!!! to the west of my true position. I have a Garmin Nuvi660 and love it with its City Navigator maps. It uses NavTeq street maps and it is spot on to my true location. Trying City Navigator on the Oregon will test whether it's the base topo map (I bet) or the GPS unit in Oregon causing the inaccuracy.
The screen is pretty dim. I'll probably want to use it with the backlight turned up most of the time. Good side is no problem making screen suitably dim at night! I'll update my review after more experience.
Edit 9/11/08: Official Garmin reply is that streets are not to be taken as 100% accurate on topo map, get City Navigator if street accuracy is desired, device out of box is for topo use. I find in San Antonio, TX most of problem is that streets are just not up-to-date. Unit is very accurate on older streets. 450 ft mispositioning I reported above is probably due to map source never getting street locations right in my gated community (can't they use satellite info or check other maps?!!). Tracks seem very reproducible and steady. Can trace over same track with high reproducibility and stability (not much tree cover or canyons in SA, TX).
Edit 9/14/08: Footnote on 400t topo maps at [...] site - "* Based on United States Geological Survey topographic maps. USGS topographic maps are primarily intended to show topography which rarely changes. The government does not update them very often to show man made changes such as buildings, streets, roads and trails - many USGS map sheets are over 20 years old."
Find in bright direct sunlight, don't need backlight, sun lights screen, easy to see. Bright diffuse light a different story-really need backlight then.
Disagree with other reviewer about pushpin. Pushpin very useful to get information about any part of map. Tap screen, easy to move map under pin, easy to rapidly change zoom fairly rapidly (zoom speed increases with tap and hold). Tap pushpin heading, easy to set way point. In Demo mode (turn GPS off in System > Setup > GPS) Easy to set waypoint anywhere in U.S. and make that your map location to examine map in 2D and 3D.
3D View is not so great. Can move and rotate map but cannot zoom in and out(!)-just have close-in view. Lack of resolution in 3D. Map shading interferes with 3D view. Screen can be very dark and muddy in high elevation areas. 3D view best at highest map detail level (Setup > Map > Advanced Map Setup > Detail-Most), which usually gives too much detail for 2D views (too busy). Garmin definitely needs to improve 3D display a bunch!!
Edit 9/12/08: Suggestion to Garmin: besides shading control and zoom in 3D view, ability to enhance/reduce Z-axis (elevation) and remove or reduce streets would help. The hills of San Franciso look ~puny in 3D compared to 2D map and the streets, so crowded, wipe out the topo info.
No problem adding or removing carabiner clip following instructions. Slides on easily for me. Battery compartment easy to open, too. Device has nice fit and finish.
Overall very happy except for 3D view. Would gladly buy again. Plan to get City Navigator for accurate, up-to-date streets and routing on city hikes and for segue back to car where I will use Nuvi for driving.
Update 5/16/2010: Works great with Garmin 24K topo maps of the Southwest and South Central (get the DVD versions and a good-sized micro SDHC card!). The 24K topo maps, besides providing higher resolution topo detail, provide relatively up-to-date and reasonably accurate street data. Be sure to update your device to the latest firmware. Use the Garmin Base Camp software to see where you've been by visualizing your tracks in Google Earth and Google Maps. Very cool.
can't see it May 12, 2010 mosi123 (new england, USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I tried very hard to see the screen and just couldn't make out anything that I need to see in order to use it while hiking. I go to dangerous places and need to know that I can rely on my gear. I've returned this for a refund and won't go with Garmin again until they fix this problem.
Great Choice for a multipurpose GPS! April 18, 2010 Lisa Aguilar (South Dakota, USA) Before making this purchase, I had been researching options and pricing.
Garmin is the BEST name in GPS, wether it be for car or trail.
This Garmin unit is WONDERFUL for geocaching, with its paperless feature. Its a MUST have for the avid or beginner cacher.
Its easy to use, easy to understand and easy to personalize. With the topographic maps that are included, this is the GPS to buy.
