With its "Where Am I?" emergency locator, you always know your location. Simply tap the screen to get your exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and fuel stations. The 1490T features Garmin Lock, an anti-theft feature, and is compatible with our free Garmin Garage where you can download custom voices and vehicles. Enhance your travel experience with optional plug-in microSD cards.

What's in the Box
nüvi 1490T, Preloaded City Navigator NT for North America, Lifetime traffic, FM traffic receiver with vehicle power cable, Vehicle suction cup mount, USB cable, Dashboard disc, Quick start manual

NOTE: The initial setup is crucial when first using your nüvi - it allows the device to find and sync with satellites. The startup screen will allow you to skip through this section but doing so could cause your nüvi to have difficulty working the way it should. Without completing this important step, your nüvi may default back to the location of Kansas City each time it is turned off and on again, not saving your settings. It also may not be able to pick up the satellite properly.

Which nüvi is Best for You?

Note: All nüvis come with detailed NAVTEQ maps containing more than 6 million pre-loaded point of interest locations.

2 out of 5 stars Common things just keep getting harder   July 30, 2010
Unnamed
I am a veteran of many Garmin GPS systems. Although I still like them better than the competition, every unit gets harder to do the most common things. When I set up a route to travel, I want that to be considered in my choices. Earlier Garmin's would default to "near current route" if a route was active. Now, it always defaults to near here. To make matters worse, there are so many choices, that "near current route" is on a separate page, requiring a page down to get to. When you are travelling, you tend to look for fast food, gas, lodging, and in my case, rest stops - all near my current route. Those items get harder to search for in ever single Garmin iteration. Why is this????? If you are just running around town, it's fine, but actual trips are a pain in the behind. I do these searches dozens of times on my trips. I SO wish Garmin would allow you to set preferences for the "near" option. Also, it would help greatly if you could program in your favorite searches. They only make favorite destinations. This doesn't help AT ALL when traveling. If anyone knows a GPS system that does this, please comment. Some of the GPS systems don't even have a fast food category. So you have to sift through a million restaurant choices to get off the freeway and get coffee. Geez...... One system (Motorola or Magellan) offered a "coffee" button way early in their menus. I was so impressed I couldn't believe it. Then I found out it showed only Starbuck and similar. McDonald's was not there at all. There sure are a lot of Starbuck's on the freeway through central Illinois....

I would like to rate this unit higher, but I still keep going back to my old Garmin 7200 (beloved HUGE screen), which is falling apart, but still so much easier to use. This unit is just kind of a backup, even though the mounting, screen and many other things are nicer. My last Nuvi quit taking satellite signals after not quite a year. Come on Garmin. Help me out here.

4 out of 5 stars Questionable long trip directions   July 29, 2010
J. Riehl (Hampton Roads, VA)
Like most here I really like the huge, bright screen and loud speaker.

I think the lane positioning and interchange features are pretty cool. My biggest complaint with the older Nuvi's (besides small screen size) was the "turn ahead" prompt 1/2 mile before the fact when you were 4 lanes over in bumper to bumper traffic.

What I REALLY don't like about this Nuvi is my recent experience on a 500+ mile drive from Southern VA to Upstate NY. It is a drive I've done enough times to have some idea what the "normal" route is, but not so many times that I know it well enough to drive without directions, especially when traffic is bad.

On this particular trip, late on a Friday afternoon, I suddenly found myself driving into the traffic jam at the George Washington Bridge before I knew what was happening, and once in that jam had no where to go but onward. In all of my other trips no other Garmin GPS has ever tried to route me through the City, until now. As I started seeing and following the signs for Albany as I proceeded up Broadway, the Nuvi was persistently trying to get me to go off on some other route. I very nearly threw the unit out of my car window in frustration. The trip back down had some similarly weird route choices. I half suspect that the different routes might have been a result of some info the traffic receiver was getting, but the unit never told me "hey, I'm re-routing you through the City because the Garden State Parkway is backed up". If it had, I would have told it no. I went all through the route settings to make sure I didn't have some block checked like "avoid toll roads at all costs" or "automatically change the route if the traffic receiver says the route is delayed", but couldn't find anything to explain what happened.

In and around town to find street addresses and POIs the unit seems to work as well as any previous unit.

Also annoyed that you can't seem to turn off touch screen beeps. I've never had a touch screen device of ANY kind where that wasn't an option in the settings.

I'm keeping the unit for the other benefits, but I'm unhappy that I have to take directions with a grain of salt and waste attention on the unit to make sure it isn't going to drive me through the center of one of the largest cities on earth late on a Friday afternoon.

5 out of 5 stars I'm lovin' it   July 28, 2010

Have had a Garmin 1490T for about 6 months now and I love it. I mainly upgraded from my previous GPS to get the bigger screen, multi-point routing, lane assist, the ability to enter direct map coordinates, and off-road navigation. I know the battery life is only about 3 hours, but that is the price you have to pay for a screen that is as big as this one (it's the screen that eats the power on many consumer goods).

I registered it on Garmin site and had maps and operating software updated to latest level in the blink of an eye. I have experienced none of the reported problems with my unit and am more than happy with it. Like many reviewers I don't like the way the POI information icon covers the map up. On the plus side it's very neat the way the map automatically zooms in when you need it to navigate road islands and tricky junctions.

It linked up to my Nokia phone with no problems, but I won't be using it for making phone calls while driving because I consider it a very anti-social and dangerous thing to do.

All in all a very well made and efficient unit, and I know from owning other Garmin equipment that their customer service is top notch if I ever need it...... I have never had a problem with previous Garmin kit that wasn't solely down to me not understanding something properly, and even though Garmin probably thought my questions were pretty basic they always answered promptly and courteously.

1 out of 5 stars NOT good   July 26, 2010
Tom W Greenwald (Novi, MI, US)

I never had a Garmin and was told to try one out. So I went and got a Garmin Nuvi 1490t. Well I had just tried a TomTom XXL and took it back thinking that the Garmin would be better. Well NO THE GARMIN IS NOT. There is a ad that pops up after payig over $230 for the unit. The TomTom has the same lifetime free traffic updates and guess what NO ads. It takes a LONG time to get a signel. The plug goes into the unit just as the TomTom, but liked the TomTOm holder better. The pictures is a neat idea if I was not DRIVING! In the map mode it let me drive off the map and had to pull over and find myself on the map again. Taking the Garmin back and going to keep looking.

Is there a unit that I can change the route to a route I want to take?
